Connecting Bosnia & Herzegovina with NRW: An Evening of Knowledge, Leadership and Community
On September 18, Bosnia and Herzegovina Futures Foundation, together with Tako Lako, brought together more than 80 Bosnians and Herzegovinians, professionals, entrepreneurs, researchers and community leaders for an evening of conversation, connection and collaboration at the historic Marienburg in Monheim am Rhein, near Düsseldorf.
The gathering was built around a simple idea: our diaspora is more than a community spread across different countries. It is a network of knowledge, experience, relationships and opportunities that can create meaningful connections with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Bringing people together
The evening opened with remarks from Benjamin Pargan, followed by a welcome from H.E. Damir Arnaut, Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Federal Republic of Germany, and Edhem Ćustović from BH Futures Foundation.
Vedad Fazlić, representing Tako Lako, then set the tone for the evening by highlighting the importance of organised communities and creating spaces where people can meet beyond their existing professional circles.
The programme continued with a series of talks exploring some of the changes shaping business, technology and leadership today.
Mirela Kadić opened the keynote programme with a look at major economic, technological and social trends. Anis Mičijević followed with insights from the German business environment and conversations with leaders and companies across the country.
The audience also heard from Dr. Damir Smajlović and Elvis Hodzić, who introduced the upcoming November gathering in Cologne.
Leadership, technology and the future
One of the evening's central moments was a fireside conversation between Amel Kovačević, General Director of BH Telecom, and Dr. Borislav Tadić, Chief Production Officer and member of the management board at 1&1 Versatel.
Moderated by Benjamin Pargan, the conversation explored leadership, telecommunications between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany, digitalisation, artificial intelligence and the changing expectations of leaders.
The discussion was followed by questions from the audience, creating an opportunity for participants to engage directly with the speakers and bring their own perspectives into the conversation.
Edhem Ćustović then shifted the focus from listening to action, introducing the structured networking part of the evening and encouraging participants to think about what they could give to the community, what they could learn from others and where meaningful connections could lead next.
Networking with a purpose
Networking was designed as more than a short break between presentations.
Participants were divided into smaller groups and encouraged to exchange experiences, identify shared interests and explore potential opportunities for collaboration.
For many, this was where the evening truly came to life.
Professionals from different industries met for the first time. Researchers exchanged ideas with entrepreneurs. People with experience in Germany connected with those working to create opportunities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The goal was not simply to exchange business cards, but to create relationships that could continue after the event.
From an evening together to a stronger community
As the formal programme came to an end, conversations continued over dinner, drinks and music at Marienburg.
The atmosphere became more informal, giving participants the opportunity to continue discussions from the programme, reconnect with old acquaintances and meet new people.
These moments are an important part of the BHFF professional meetup format.
Since its founding, Bosnia and Herzegovina Futures Foundation has organised more than 200 professional meetups around the world, bringing together members of the Bosnian and Herzegovinian diaspora and creating opportunities for knowledge exchange, mentorship, networking and collaboration.
The NRW gathering added another chapter to that growing network.
Looking ahead
The evening in Monheim was not intended to be a one off gathering.
It was another step towards building stronger relationships between Bosnians and Herzegovinians in Germany and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and towards creating a community where professional knowledge, experience and opportunities can move in both directions.
A successful meetup is not measured only by how many people attend.
It is measured by what happens afterwards.
A message sent the next morning.
A new professional connection.
A mentorship conversation.
A collaboration that starts with one introduction.
An idea that eventually makes its way back to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
That is the kind of community we want to keep building.
