BHFF Alumni Dino Burić Presents AI-Powered Cardiac Monitoring Research at IEEE SpliTech Conference

Bosnia & Herzegovina Futures Foundation (BHFF) Alumni Dino Burić recently presented his research at the 11th edition of the IEEE SpliTech Conference held in Bol, Croatia, contributing to ongoing discussions on the practical applications of artificial intelligence in healthcare.

His research project, Kardia, explores how emerging technologies can be integrated into real-world medical solutions. The system represents an IoT-Cloud-AI cardiac monitoring platform designed to enhance how heart health is tracked, interpreted, and communicated.

Kardia combines a compact fingertip sensor, a microcontroller, and cloud-based infrastructure with artificial intelligence to create a comprehensive monitoring system. Beyond simply collecting physiological data, the system is designed to interpret vital signs, provide explanations, and offer guidance to users, moving toward more accessible and user-centered healthcare technologies.

A key innovation within the project is its hybrid AI architecture. This approach integrates deterministic logic—ensuring that critical medical thresholds are reliably detected—with a large language model that enables clear and human-like communication of insights. Such a combination allows the system to maintain high reliability while also improving user interaction and understanding.

This publication marks Dino Burić’s second peer-reviewed paper indexed on IEEE Xplore, highlighting his continued contribution to research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and healthcare technologies.

The research was conducted in collaboration with a team from the Faculty of Information Technologies at the University “Džemal Bijedić” in Mostar, including Prof. Elmir Babović, Prof. Sanja Kapetanović, Prof. Nina Bijedić, and Prof. Sanja Tipurić-Spužević, along with colleague Adna Ćušić. Additional support and recognition were provided by Teodoro Montanaro, who expressed strong interest in the project.

The work was also supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Science, further emphasizing the importance of institutional backing for innovative research initiatives.

Through this presentation, Dino Burić contributed to international dialogue on the future of healthcare, demonstrating how interdisciplinary approaches can lead to meaningful advancements. His work reflects the broader mission of the Bosnia & Herzegovina Futures Foundation—to support young professionals in achieving excellence and creating impactful solutions on a global stage.
