Social Change and the Power of Collective Action: How Do Communities Evolve?
Panel Discussion 1 | Futures Leaders Summit
At the Futures Leaders Summit, Panel Discussion 1 brings together activists and changemakers to explore one of the most pressing questions in Bosnia and Herzegovina today: how can collective action drive meaningful social change in complex socio-political environments?
Titled “Social Change and the Power of Collective Action: How Do Communities Evolve?”, this panel focuses on the realities of activism and civic engagement in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The discussion examines how engaged young people are in the NGO and civil society sector, what motivates them to take action, and the barriers they encounter — from limited financial resources and institutional support to restricted space for civic participation.
The panel also addresses a critical and often uncomfortable question: what is the real impact of activism today? In a context shaped by political fragmentation, social fatigue, and systemic challenges, panelists reflect on both the successes and limitations of civic action, highlighting why initiative and persistence remain essential despite the obstacles.
Through an open and honest exchange with experienced and inspiring speakers, the session offers concrete examples of successful local initiatives, making civic engagement more tangible and accessible for young people. The panel creates space for dialogue about the future of activism in BiH, encouraging participants to reflect on their own role within their communities.
Above all, this discussion emphasizes why activism matters. Civic engagement empowers individuals, strengthens social bonds, and acts as a catalyst for long-term societal progress — particularly in societies navigating transition and uncertainty. By highlighting both the impact and the responsibility that come with collective action, this panel aims to inspire the next generation not to accept the status quo, but to question it, challenge it, and actively work toward positive change.
