Alumni Success Story: Zlata Jašarević
Zlata Jašarević, an alumna of BH Futures Foundation, enriched her academic and professional journey through the prestigious Erasmus Mundus SERP+ program, an experience she describes as “a rollercoaster ride – full of unpredictable ups and downs, intense emotions, fear, and excitement.”
Motivation to Apply
Zlata always dreamed of studying abroad. During her undergraduate studies, she considered an Erasmus+ semester exchange, but her faculty’s network of partner universities didn’t make it possible. She discovered the Erasmus Mundus program later, after facing health challenges and the global pandemic, which became a turning point in her life.
“The chance to study abroad was more than an academic opportunity – it was a way to regain confidence, take control of my life, and face challenges I would otherwise avoid,” Zlata explains.
Expectations vs. Reality
Zlata admits she didn’t know what to expect, particularly regarding the French educational system, which proved to be extremely challenging. However, the research component of the program exceeded her expectations, offering hands-on experience and the chance to develop professional skills in an international environment.
“French is definitely a challenging language – it teaches you humility and patience. But the research experience was truly the highlight of my program,” she adds.
Biggest Challenges and Most Memorable Moments
The biggest challenges were adapting to different educational systems and handling administrative matters like visas and residence permits. The emotional toll of constant change also required Zlata to develop strategies for resilience and balance.
The most memorable moments, however, were the friendships and connections she formed with people from around the world. “They became like family when my real one was far away. We supported and learned from each other – those are memories that last a lifetime,” Zlata recalls.
Role of BH Futures Foundation
Zlata emphasizes that her experience with BH Futures Foundation played a key role in preparing her for international life. Working on diverse projects and mentoring others helped her develop flexibility, resilience, and effective communication – skills crucial for thriving in multicultural environments.
“Being part of BH Futures Foundation taught me how to support others and reflect on my own experiences, which made adapting to new international settings much easier and more rewarding,” she explains.
Advice for Future Applicants
“Don’t overthink it – just apply! Nothing truly happens in your comfort zone. Every challenge feels smaller when you face it, and the experience is unique, often becoming one of the most beautiful moments in your life,” Zlata encourages BH Futures Foundation members and volunteers.
