Finding Opportunity in the Unexpected: Sumeja Kalabić’s Scholarship Journey
Sometimes, the best opportunities are the ones that find us when we least expect them. For Sumeja Kalabić, a student at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Sarajevo, that’s exactly how her scholarship journey began.
“I originally applied for another opportunity offered by the Foundation,” Sumeja recalls, “but someone else turned out to be a better match. A few weeks later, I received a call inviting me to become a scholarship recipient supported by a company that wanted to sponsor a student from my faculty. It felt like the right opportunity had found me.”
The scholarship gave Sumeja the freedom to fully focus on her studies and self-development. Without the constant pressure of finances, she could dedicate more time to learning, exploring her interests, and improving her skills. “The greatest value of the scholarship was that it allowed me to truly focus on my studies and on becoming the best version of myself,” she says.
Throughout her scholarship experience, Sumeja also had the chance to meet with her sponsor and receive valuable advice. “That conversation gave me guidance on formal education and, more importantly, encouragement — both for my studies and for the activities I’m involved in within the Foundation,” she adds.
Although the scholarship was primarily financial support, Sumeja believes it opened doors to much more. “It helped me invest in experiences that strengthened my knowledge and confidence,” she explains. “It also made it easier to take on internships and volunteer roles that weren’t financially driven, but focused on gaining skills and real-world experience.”
Looking ahead, Sumeja is determined to continue developing both personally and professionally. “This experience reminded me that the right opportunities will always come — as long as you keep working on yourself and stay open to learning.”
Her advice to future scholarship recipients is simple yet powerful: “Use this opportunity to invest in yourself — in your education, your skills, and your growth. That’s the best way to honor the support you’ve received.”
