IEEE Innovation Nation 2026: Build Your Skills, Develop an Idea, and Turn It Into a Real Solution
What does it take to turn an idea into something that can actually solve a real problem?
For young people interested in innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, and building solutions for the future, the answer goes beyond having a great idea. It requires the ability to understand real problems, work with different people, test assumptions, develop practical solutions, and communicate why those solutions matter.
That is the experience at the heart of IEEE Innovation Nation, a 12 week innovation and entrepreneurship program designed for young adults in Bosnia and Herzegovina between the ages of 18 and 26.
The program combines structured entrepreneurship education, practical product development, mentorship, industry expertise, and teamwork. Participants work in multidisciplinary teams to identify real world challenges and develop innovative solutions that could continue beyond the program.
What is IEEE Innovation Nation?
IEEE Innovation Nation is an innovation and entrepreneurship program created to help young people develop the professional and entrepreneurial skills needed in today's changing workforce.
Technical knowledge remains important, but successful innovation requires much more than technical expertise. Young professionals increasingly need to communicate effectively, collaborate across disciplines, adapt to new challenges, understand users, recognize opportunities, and turn ideas into practical solutions.
Innovation Nation brings these skills together through a hands on learning experience based on the principles of Disciplined Entrepreneurship, a structured approach to developing viable ventures.
Rather than simply learning about entrepreneurship, participants are expected to apply what they learn while working on a real product, service, or program.
A 12 week innovation experience
Over 12 weeks, participants work in multidisciplinary teams and move through the process of developing a solution to a clearly defined problem.
The journey begins with understanding the problem and the people experiencing it. Teams conduct user research and engage with potential users to validate their assumptions.
From there, they develop and test their ideas, work toward a minimum viable product, and explore the business side of their solution.
This includes considering questions such as:
What problem are we solving?
Who is experiencing this problem?
What do users actually need?
What value does our solution provide?
Could the solution work in the real world?
What would it take to develop it further?
By the end of the program, teams have the opportunity to present their work at a final showcase during the Futures Leaders Summit, where they can receive feedback from judges, industry representatives, and the wider community.
Learn innovation by actually doing it
One of the defining features of Innovation Nation is its practical approach.
Participants take part in a combination of online workshops, expert lectures, mentoring, pitch practice, coaching sessions, and live events.
Interactive workshops
Workshops are interactive sessions built around specific topics from the program curriculum. Participants work together on activities designed to help them apply new concepts directly to their projects.
Industry guest lectures
Participants are exposed to professionals working in innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, and related fields. These sessions provide insight into real professional experiences and contemporary approaches to developing and scaling solutions.
Pitch practice
Having a good idea is only part of the challenge. Being able to explain that idea clearly is equally important.
Bi weekly pitch practice sessions give teams an opportunity to present their ideas, receive structured feedback, and improve their storytelling, clarity, and delivery.
Mentorship
Each team receives continuous mentorship after the fifth week of the program.
Teams can also schedule meetings with expert mentors from different professional fields. Participants are expected to have one to three expert mentoring meetings each week, giving them opportunities to receive advice from people with practical industry experience.
Final pitch
The program culminates in a final pitch at the Futures Leaders Summit.
Teams present their developed solutions to a panel of judges, industry representatives, and a broader audience. It is an opportunity to demonstrate what they have built, communicate the value of their solution, and receive feedback that could help them continue developing their idea.
What will you gain from Innovation Nation?
Innovation Nation is designed to provide more than classroom knowledge.
Participants have the opportunity to develop skills that can be useful whether they eventually launch a startup, join a company, pursue further education, or work on innovation within an existing organization.
Through the program, participants can:

Up to 24 fully funded places
One of the major opportunities offered through IEEE Innovation Nation 2026 is access to up to 24 fully funded program places.
Each place covers a program valued at 5,300 BAM per participant, giving selected participants access to the full innovation and entrepreneurship learning experience.
Participants who successfully complete the program also receive an official certificate from IEEE and BH Futures Foundation.
Additional opportunities include cash prizes for top performing teams and recognition as an IEEE Innovation Nation Fellow, connecting graduates with a global professional network spanning more than 180 countries.
Selected teams may also have an opportunity to receive further exposure to angel investors and venture capital representatives following the final showcase, depending on the maturity and potential of their solutions.
Who can apply for IEEE Innovation Nation?
The program is designed for passionate students and young professionals who want to develop their skills in innovation and entrepreneurship.
You can apply if you:
• Are between 18 and 26 years old
• Primarily reside in Bosnia and Herzegovina
• Can commit at least 10 hours per week to the program
• Have basic conversational English
• Are motivated to learn about innovation, entrepreneurship, and developing solutions
You do not need to already have a team.
Participants who apply individually will be placed into teams at the beginning of the program. If you already have a team in mind, you can indicate this in your application. Teams can have a maximum of four members, and interdisciplinary teams are strongly encouraged.
You are also not expected to arrive with a fully developed startup idea.
The program is built around learning how to identify problems, understand users, develop solutions, and test ideas.
Do you need previous startup experience?
No specific startup experience is required.
The selection process focuses primarily on motivation, past experience, and commitment.
Motivation accounts for 50 percent of the selection criteria, while past experience accounts for 30 percent and commitment for 20 percent.
This means that applicants should focus on clearly communicating why they want to participate, what experiences have shaped their interest in innovation or entrepreneurship, and why they are prepared to commit to the full program.
What does the commitment look like?
Innovation Nation is a serious learning experience and participants are expected to actively participate throughout the 12 weeks.
Participants should be prepared to attend workshops, coaching sessions, lectures, mentoring activities, and other program activities. They are also expected to complete assignments on time and contribute to their team's work.
To receive the certificate of completion, participants must attend at least 80 percent of scheduled workshops and coaching sessions and present their final project or prototype.
The program is designed for people who want to challenge themselves, not simply add another certificate to their CV.

Why innovation skills matter for the future
The modern workforce is changing quickly.
Being highly skilled in one technical area can provide a strong foundation, but long term professional development increasingly depends on the ability to work across disciplines and adapt to new situations.
Innovation requires curiosity.
Entrepreneurship requires initiative.
Product development requires collaboration.
And solving meaningful problems requires understanding the people affected by them.
IEEE Innovation Nation brings these elements together in one structured experience, giving young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina an opportunity to learn by working on real challenges with real teams, mentors, and experts.
For participants, the goal is not simply to finish a 12 week program.
It is to leave with new skills, new connections, a stronger understanding of innovation, and a solution that has the potential to continue developing beyond the program.
