Passion Project: “Futures (Tech) Horizons” – Shaping Realistic Perspectives on the Future of IT

On May 7th, 2026, a one-day educational and interactive event titled “Futures (Tech) Horizons” was organized at the premises of ZEDA (Zenica Development Agency) in Zenica, under the umbrella of the Bosnia & Herzegovina Futures Foundation (BHFF).

The project was led by Imad Buljić, Junior Scholar, a software engineer and master’s student, as the main organizer, alongside co-organizer Lamija Mehić, Junior Scholar. Together, they designed an event aimed at creating space for honest, open, and constructive conversations about the future—using IT as a starting point, but extending far beyond it. The project was mentored by Samra Smajić, Senior Scholar.

About the Project Concept

Futures (Tech) Horizons was developed with the intention of helping high school and university students build a more realistic and grounded understanding of the IT industry and their future within it.

While IT served as the central theme, the broader mission of the project focused on empowering young people to think critically about their paths, challenge common misconceptions, and move beyond the increasingly present pessimistic narratives surrounding career development. By addressing the gap between expectations and reality, the event encouraged participants to approach their future with clarity, responsibility, and confidence.

The project emphasized not only professional orientation, but also personal growth—providing participants with practical guidance for academic development, career building, and life decision-making.

Educational Content and Key Topics

The event brought together a diverse set of perspectives, combining academic expertise, student experience, and industry insight.

A central part of the program focused on the impact of artificial intelligence on the IT industry and the evolving role of future professionals. Through expert-led discussions, participants explored how technological change should not be approached with fear, but rather with adaptability and continuous learning.

In addition, the student perspective offered a grounded look at how AI is already integrated into everyday academic life. Discussions addressed both the opportunities and the risks of widespread AI usage, encouraging participants to reflect on responsible and mindful engagement with these tools.

A keynote lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Samir Lemeš, who addressed the topic of artificial intelligence and its growing influence on the IT industry, offering insights into how students and professionals can adapt to ongoing changes.

Through this combination, the event successfully connected theory with real-life application, making complex topics accessible and relevant.

Interactive Learning and Career Exploration

One of the key elements of Futures (Tech) Horizons was its strong emphasis on interaction and open dialogue.

Participants had the opportunity to engage directly with young professionals working in the IT sector through an informal, small-group format. These conversations allowed students to ask unfiltered questions about studies, career paths, workplace realities, and personal experiences in the industry.

Among the professionals who shared their insights were Ajla Brdarević, Delaida Muminović, and Emina Skopljak, who contributed to creating an open and honest discussion environment.

This approach created a safe and honest environment where participants could move beyond idealized perceptions and gain practical insights into what a career in IT truly entails.

Personal Development and Motivation

In addition to technical and industry-focused discussions, the event placed significant importance on personal development.

Through a combination of storytelling and open discussion, participants were introduced to real-life experiences that highlighted the importance of persistence, self-belief, and continuous improvement. The message was clear: career paths are rarely linear, and meaningful progress is often built through challenges, growth, and consistent effort.

This segment of the event resonated strongly with participants, encouraging them to reflect on their own journeys and recognize their potential for change and success.

Engagement and Atmosphere

The event maintained a dynamic and engaging atmosphere throughout the day, combining educational sessions with interactive elements such as discussions and a thematic quiz.

This structure ensured that participants remained actively involved, while also reinforcing key concepts in an accessible and engaging way. The balance between formal content and informal interaction contributed to a supportive learning environment where ideas could be freely exchanged.

Impact and Takeaways

Futures (Tech) Horizons highlighted the importance of creating spaces where young people can openly discuss their concerns, expectations, and ambitions regarding the future.

By addressing both the opportunities and uncertainties of the IT industry, the project helped participants develop a more balanced and realistic perspective. At the same time, it equipped them with practical insights and tools to navigate their academic and professional journeys more confidently.

Participants left the event not only with new knowledge, but also with a stronger sense of direction and empowerment.

Looking Ahead

As a Passion Project under the Bosnia & Herzegovina Futures Foundation, Futures (Tech) Horizons demonstrates the value of youth-led initiatives in fostering meaningful dialogue and learning.

By combining mentorship, real-world insights, and interactive formats, the project successfully bridged the gap between information and understanding. It stands as an example of how honest conversations and shared experiences can inspire young individuals to take ownership of their future and approach it with purpose and resilience.
