BHFF Academy in Banja Luka: Strengthening Skills, Sharing Perspectives, Building Community

From April 27th to 29th, Banja Luka became a hub of learning, collaboration, and growth as 32 Junior and Senior Scholars gathered for another BH Futures Foundation Academy. Over the course of three days, participants had the opportunity to strengthen their skills, exchange ideas, and deepen connections within the community.

The Academy was designed not only as an educational experience, but as a platform for personal and professional development. Through interactive sessions and peer learning, scholars worked on sharpening competencies essential for their future careers, while also building relationships that extend far beyond the event itself.

A key highlight of the Academy was the company visit to City Gecko, an innovative company redefining urban spaces through smart and sustainable solutions.

Beyond this, the program brought together a diverse set of workshops and activities, each contributing to a well-rounded experience.

One of the most impactful sessions was the Alumni Impact Workshop, led by a long-term BHFF alumnus whose journey within the Foundation spans over a decade. Through sharing personal experiences, challenges, and milestones, the session offered scholars a transparent look into what long-term engagement with BHFF can bring. More than just insights, the workshop emphasized perspective — highlighting that growth is shaped not only by opportunities, but by the people, lessons, and decisions along the way. It served as a powerful reminder that the true value of the Foundation lies in empowering individuals to recognize their potential and take initiative.

The Education Team further contributed with a workshop on Assertive Communication in the Workplace, led by Milica Jovičić. This session focused on developing clear, confident, and respectful communication within professional environments. Scholars explored how to express ideas effectively, navigate team dynamics, and handle challenging conversations — all essential skills for thriving in modern workplaces.

An especially dynamic and hands-on session was led by alumna Ena Milković, focusing on teamwork, communication, and self-awareness in group settings. The workshop was structured around three interactive activities, each designed with specific rules that required participants to consciously adapt their communication style.

Through these challenges, scholars were placed in situations where success depended not only on what they communicated, but how they communicated. They practiced active listening, clarity in expression, and coordination within a team, while adjusting to constraints that reflected real-world communication dynamics.

A key focus of the workshop was self-reflection. Participants were encouraged to recognize their own communication patterns — including habits that can hinder effective collaboration — and to identify ways to improve them. By becoming more aware of how they interact within a team, scholars gained practical insights into how to communicate more effectively, adapt to different team dynamics, and contribute to better overall outcomes.

Creating space for open dialogue, Senior Scholar Sumeja Muratović facilitated a reflective session where participants explored thought-provoking questions in a relaxed and informal setting. This approach encouraged honest conversations, allowing scholars to share perspectives, experiences, and ideas in a way that strengthened mutual understanding and connection.

The final day shifted towards a more relaxed and interactive format. A Volunteering Workshop, organized by Volunteering Team Leader Aiša Bečić, highlighted the importance of giving back, community engagement, and the broader impact of volunteerism within BHFF and beyond. This was followed by a trivia quiz, organized by Hana Helać, bringing energy, collaboration, and a sense of fun to close the Academy on a high note.

The Academy in Banja Luka once again proved to be more than just a series of sessions — it was a space where scholars, volunteers, and alumni came together to share knowledge, exchange perspectives, and strengthen the bonds that make the BH Futures Foundation community unique.

Through learning, collaboration, and team-building, participants left not only with new skills, but with renewed motivation and a stronger sense of belonging.
