Over 80 Guests Fill Celebrate Bosnia & Herzegovina Professionals Excellence at University of Toronto

Over 80 professionals, academics, entrepreneurs, researchers, students and community leaders came together in Toronto on Friday evening for another successful Bosnia & Herzegovina Professionals Meetup, organised by the Bosnia & Herzegovina Futures Foundation.

Held at the prestigious Faculty Club at the University of Toronto, the event reached full capacity, and then some, bringing together an impressive cross-section of the Bosnia & Herzegovina community in Canada for an evening of ideas, professional networking and new connections.

The evening was hosted by Prof. Ervin Sejdić of the University of Toronto and Dr. Edhem (Eddie) Čustović, Founder of the Bosnia & Herzegovina Futures Foundation, continuing the Foundation's efforts to build stronger professional networks among people of Bosnia & Herzegovina heritage around the world.

AI and Us: Four Industries, Four Perspectives

A major focus of the evening was a special discussion titled “Artificial Intelligence and Us: The Latest in AI and Its Impact Across Sectors.”

Chaired by Prof. Sejdić, the conversation moved beyond the hype surrounding artificial intelligence and explored how AI is already transforming healthcare, gaming, real estate, banking and finance — as well as the challenges that come with that transformation.

The panel brought together four accomplished professionals offering perspectives from very different industries.

Prof. Ervin Sejdić, Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto and Research Chair in Artificial Intelligence for Health Outcomes at North York General Hospital, discussed the growing role of AI in healthcare and medicine. His research combines artificial intelligence, engineering and medicine, including the use of machine learning and biomedical signal processing to identify disease markers and improve patient outcomes.

Almir Brljak, Co-Founder and CEO of Toronto-based Sinn Studio, shared an entrepreneur's perspective on AI in gaming, virtual reality and spatial computing. Sinn Studio has built internationally successful VR titles and is developing proprietary AI technology for spatial applications.

Ado Topuz, CEO of AgentLocator, explored AI in the real estate industry, including how automation and intelligent systems are changing the way real-estate professionals generate leads, communicate with prospective clients and manage relationships.

Building Bridges Between Industry and the University of Toronto

For Prof. Sejdić, the evening was also an opportunity to highlight the importance of creating stronger links between universities, industry and professional communities.

He thanked his department and colleagues at the University of Toronto for supporting the event and helping create an environment where these communities can come together.

“I am very grateful to my department and colleagues at the University of Toronto for their support in making this gathering possible. Universities have an important role not only in education and research, but also in bringing people together. Events like this create opportunities to connect our research community with industry, entrepreneurs and professionals working on real-world challenges. Building those bridges between the University of Toronto and industry can lead to new collaborations, new ideas and, ultimately, greater impact,” said Prof. Sejdić.

The diversity of the evening reflected exactly that ambition: researchers exchanging ideas with entrepreneurs, technology leaders meeting students and young professionals, and members of the wider community discovering opportunities to collaborate across institutional and industry boundaries.

Celebrating Bosnia & Herzegovina Excellence in Canada

Beyond artificial intelligence, the evening celebrated the extraordinary professional achievements of people with roots in Bosnia & Herzegovina who are building careers, companies, research programs and communities across Canada.

A special part of the program recognised individuals not only for professional achievement, but also for leadership, community contribution and their willingness to use their knowledge, experience and networks to create opportunities for others.

For the Bosnia & Herzegovina Futures Foundation, that is an important part of the philosophy behind its global meetup series.

The objective is not simply to bring successful people into the same room. It is to transform professional networks into meaningful relationships, relationships that can lead to mentorship, collaboration, investment, knowledge exchange and opportunities for the next generation.

The Toronto gathering demonstrated the enormous potential of that approach.

With nearly 90 guests filling the Faculty Club, conversations continued throughout the evening between people from academia, technology, finance, healthcare, entrepreneurship and numerous other sectors.

Some were meeting for the first time. Others were reconnecting after years. Many left with new introductions, ideas and potential collaborations.

A Global Community Connected to Bosnia & Herzegovina

The Toronto event forms part of the Bosnia & Herzegovina Futures Foundation's broader effort to connect the country's global professional community.

The Foundation's Professionals Meetup series creates informal environments where established professionals, emerging leaders and younger generations can meet, allowing friendships, collaborations, mentorships and new ideas to develop organically.

For Bosnia & Herzegovina, a country with an extraordinary global diaspora, these connections matter.

The knowledge, experience and networks of people who have built successful careers around the world represent an enormous resource. Creating stronger bridges between those professionals, their institutions and Bosnia & Herzegovina can open doors for young people, researchers, entrepreneurs and organisations on both sides of the Atlantic.

Toronto provided another powerful example of what can happen when that community is brought together.

Nearly 90 people. A full house. Four different perspectives on one of the defining technologies of our time. And one shared goal: building a stronger, better connected global Bosnia & Herzegovina community.
