Philanthropy Is for Everyone – When Success Opens Up Choices

Speaker: Vedran Drakulić

Philanthropy is often perceived as something reserved for the wealthy or the powerful. Yet, at its core, it is about choice, responsibility, and values. In this deeply personal and inspiring session, Vedran Drakulić challenges the idea that giving back is limited to a select few—and instead reframes philanthropy as a path open to everyone whose success creates the opportunity to make a difference.

Born in Sarajevo, Vedran Drakulić’s life story is one shaped by resilience, service, and humanity. During the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, he worked with the Red Cross as a logistician, translator, and press officer, delivering humanitarian aid on both sides of the frontlines. In 1995, he arrived in Australia as a refugee, carrying with him firsthand experience of hardship, displacement, and the power of solidarity.

From Survival to Service

What followed was not just a new beginning, but a lifelong commitment to community. In Australia, Vedran continued his humanitarian work through organizations such as the Australian Red Cross, Oxfam Australia, RACV, and the Gandel Foundation. Over the years, he transformed wartime resilience into a purpose-driven career dedicated to social justice, community development, and long-term impact.

His contributions have been recognized at the highest level. Vedran Drakulić OAM is the first Bosnian and Herzegovinian recipient of the Order of Australia, the country’s highest civilian honour, awarded for outstanding service to the community.

Giving Back as a Way of Life

Today, Vedran remains deeply committed to giving back. A proud “Bossie” (Bosnian Aussie), he actively supports numerous causes and organizations, including the Vinnies CEO Sleepout, where he has raised over $250,000 in the past four years to support homelessness programs. He also serves on the boards of multiple foundations and community organizations, continuing to advocate for inclusive and compassionate leadership.

Yet, as this session emphasizes, philanthropy is not about titles or recognition. It is about using whatever platform, resources, or influence one has to create positive change.

Lessons for the Next Generation

At Futures Leaders Summit, Vedran Drakulić will share insights and lessons drawn from three decades of humanitarian and philanthropic work. His message is both empowering and grounded: success brings choices, and with those choices comes responsibility.

For young people from Bosnia and Herzegovina, this session offers a rare opportunity to hear from a Sarajevan whose impact spans continents—someone who proves that purpose, empathy, and action can turn personal success into collective progress.
